[Eg0_214] Podarces & various artists : Frozen Journeys

Under the Podarces pseudonym Benoît Rouits (who also plays oboe in Jukpic ) creates experimental improvised music with keyboards. Last year he made us discover one of his old works :  A Frozen Journey, made in 2009 with virtual synthesizers and inspired by some writings of Philip K. Dick. We enjoyed this album a lot and although it undoubtedly stands on its own we felt its minimalist abstraction could make it a very interesting material to incorporate in new works. We made this suggestion to Benoît and some other collaborators and aquaintances who agreed and accepted to contribute remixes of what is now called “Frozen Journeys”, featuring the original tracks as well as remixes by Humanfobia, Human Koala, Nina Kardec, Anastatsia Vronski, Kecap Tuyul, Nicolas Tourney, Sig Valax, Filmy Ghost, Yann Pillas, Thomas Park, Luciftias, Doedelzak.

[Eg0_210] Doedelzak : ilypd

A few months after the lovely P8 phase 3, our regular contributor Doedelzak comes back with another longform composition using an hybrid methodology and taking inspiration from various musical aesthetics. Ilpyd is subtle and catchy, hypnotic and surprising in the same time.

Notes by the artist
“Ilypd was created partially through algorithms, with a slow and alsmot imperceptible evolution. Though, there is a big change between the beginning and the end.
Although there are small internal changes, the evolution of the global structure is strictly continuous. The perception of changes (and notably the perception of acceleration) may appear intermittently as if on particular moments the listener’s mind was suddenly creating the image of a new step being crossed, but ilypd is perpetually changing.
Ilypd can be listened in one go, or on the contraty intermittently. It is not necessary to hear it from the beginning, nor until the end.
Inspiration for this work came from traditional African music, Gamelan, and Steve Reich. This is a musical material more than a composition – and I simply wanted to make this material beautiful”

[Eg0_205] M.A.K.T. Sono : ‘UNK

Since their beginnings in February 2018, M.A.K.T. Sono (Magali Albespy and Kecap Tuyul) have been experimenting with different set-ups and ways of playing. Amongst them, they like to play both on the same instruments / set-ups in the same time. It’s what they did on ‘UNK.0, an improvisation played on a no-input mixer. The other tracks of this EP are electronic compositions by Kecap Tuyul and Doedelzak using this improvisation as only sound material.

[Eg0_197] Doedelzak : P8 phase 3

P8 phase 3 presents another side of the work of our regular contributor Doedelzak. This time he used an hybrid methodology of improvisation, generative music and post-production manipulations. The 3 phases indicated in the title refer to the three main stages of the creative process used here :
phase 1 : improvisation on MIDI piano
phase 2 : extension on multiple virtual instruments, using aleatory distributions
phase 3 : superpositions, accelerations/decelerations, volumes
The result is multi-layered composition which is in the same time easy to the ear (thanks to its smooth sounds and melodic components) and very complex and ever changing. It could be enjoyed as background music but is also fascinating for a more focused listening which will let you discover many details and subtleties of the piece.

[Eg0_194] Onde Poussière: del_din04

After a web collaboration (album Imperceptible,) Onde Poussière return to free improvisation with their 4th album del_din04, made of sessions recorded on 25th and 26th september 2018. For this occasion, they once more experimented with new set-ups, this time with a focus on lo-fi sound. Doedelzak played laptop amplified with cheap computer speakers and occasionnaly flute, while Kecap Tuyul used his z(xW+yW), a low-tech modular system based on tiny battery-powered guitar amplifiers and contact microphones. Through this new change they continue to explore sonic material and techniques that are likely to cause various accidents and usually unwanted sounds, which are an essential part of the ground on which the band build its improvised soundscapes.

Onde Poussière have used the same set-up in a live performance that took place in Paris on september 26th and can be heard on the duo’s freshly launched bandcamp page. For their next live performance (Tiasi, Paris, 9 janvier 2018), they will try something new again, probably focusing on acoustic instruments with occasional lo-fi amplification.

[Eg0_185] Aloyse : Sounds of the Selves EP

We welcome the first release of french artist (writer and musician) Aloyse. His refined electronic music evolves between ambiguous shifts and clear lines, using fuzzy textures, subdued melodies and sparse, fragmented beats. This diversity of approaches is also reflected in the  reinterpretations by 8 other artists who remixed the 4 original tracks :

Presentation of the project by Aloyse : ” Sound of the selves is a sound project between field recording and the art of sampling designed to be listened to during a stage performance. Shown in various places in Paris the performance “Parachute”, presented by the theatre company Machine, consists in a mobile dome under which one comedian faces one spectator. A couple of minutes to save the world from its delusions, a moment of intense intimacy before the world and its chaotic noise repeat themselves.
Sound of the selves is also an invitation to think and recreate the bound between the voices of the world and the voice of the machine: 8 musicians with variegated backgrounds offered an edit of one of the tracks in order to push one step ahead the endless communication between the creative forms of life.”

[Eg0_175] Doedelzak : Carillon

Much more minimalist than Wandering in Dust that we published in 2015, Carillon, the new album of Doedelzak is made of almost nothing. It will discretly merge with your surroundings and the hidden things of your daily life. Maybe you will not notice it at all, which is fine too.

[Eg0_169] Onde Poussière: Vague seconde

Vague Seconde, the second album of Onde Poussière, documents the group’s evolution since their beginnings and their first album Silent Rain. Doedelzak now plays interconnected analog synthesiszers, and Kecap Tuyul has dropped the guitar and uses a “no-input mixer” with effects. Their improvisations are based on the creation of unstable situations in which some accidental sounds might happen at any time…
