[Eg0_160] Geosmin with friends : Adrift In the Backland

Geosmin is an ambient/drone duo composed of Jules/Valentin (guitar etc) and Manuel Devier aka 3EHNT (bass), who are also members of the french XtetX Collective. Their half improvised music is mostly harmonious and dreamy. On Adrift in the Backland they are joined by two other members of the XtetX Collective : Doedelzak (synth) and Kecap Tuyul (prepared guitar etc), who regularily play in duo as Onde Poussière.
The 3 tracks of the album were recorded on a rainy afternoon of july 2015 in Kecap Tuyul’s home studio. They definitely have the Geosmin’s typical bittersweet mood and foggy sound, although the presence of the 2 guests add some more contrasted and experimental elements.

[Eg0_159] Janne Nummela : Level Crossing

Janne Nummela (b. 1973) is a Finnish experimental artist working in the intersection of the technology and creativity with process art attitude. He has released four albums of experimental multigenre music, five volumes of poetry and installed a number of visual art exhibitions.
Level Crossing is part of a larger composition process started early 2015. It uses multiple ingredients and is polymetric in rhytmical nature. It combines sounds from field recordings, speech, virtual analog synthesizers, MSP/Max programmed sythesizers, sampled instruments with various manipulations.
Most of the separate compositions are made by MSP/Max based composition tool, programmed by the composer himself. This tool is a kind of musical meta-instrument with just a few more parametric layers or dimensions than usual musical instruments. Input of the tool is any kind of extractable or hand/foot controlled data. Output is the MIDI data or controlling data for the synthesizers.
Despite the serialist nature of the composing (material production / improvisation) process, the realtime auditive feedback is important. So far this process is too unstable to be realized on live performances, thus it exists in laboratory environments only. Modern serialist methodology, mainly based on Stockhausens and Messiaens work, is used to introduce controlled but maximal musical diversity using up to date computer and studio technology.

Janne Nummela has studied music technology in Sibelius Academy Helsinki, and he has a Master of Science degree in Acoustics Engineering from Aalto University Helsinki.

[Eg0_158] 2Kutup & Delikbeyin : Susurrous EP

2Kutup (aka Pinar Akbay) and Delikbeyin (aka Ibrahim Bayram) are 2 experimental musicians from Turkey. In their split EP Susurrous they focus on deep and dark atmospheres. Ghostly drones, trembling winds, melancolic piano echoes and muffled slow beats – all these elements blend smoothly and form a perfect soundtrack for winter.

[Eg0_156] N. Fushigi : Invisible

One year after his debut album Terrorism , one-man band N. Fushigi is back on eg0cide with a second opus called Invisible. Once again an effective mixture of catchy industrial rock and dark ambiences served with an excellent sense of timing and arrangements. This could be the soundtrack of an experimental cyberpunk thriller, but doesn’t need any narrative plot to keep the listener’s attention.

[Eg0_155] Half Evidence & Now Cut : Des ailes dans le plomb

Half Evidence ( Kecap Tuyul and Charles premier) and Now Cut (Stéphanie Briand and Philippe Desclais) are two french bands with many common points : all their members are self-taught (and not really interested in learning how to play music “normally”), they like unexpected sounds and strange soundscapes, they use modified and/or home made instruments, they love to play with other improvisers / experimental bands.  So it’s no surprise that they decided to try to play together shortly after they discovered each other’s music. Des ailes dans le plomb was improvised and recorded during their first meeting in november 2014.

[Eg0_154] Onde Poussière : Silent Rain

Doedelzak and Kecap Tuyul met in spring 2015 thanks to improvisation sessions of the XtetX Collective. They then decide to play as a duo that wants to develop a more focused sound :  Onde Poussière . Their music relies on a careful mutual listening and a quite restrained palette. It gives a particular attention to contrasts, silences, subtle shifts – but can also be quite agitated and even noisy sometimes. Their first album Silent Rain consists of 2 unedited improvisation recorded on october 2015.

Reviews

David Nemeth / Acts of Silence (january 2, 2016)

“(…) Tuyul has an extensive discography of working with other musicians and is known for his playing on prepared guitar, though thinking of him solely as a guitarist would be preposterous. His journeys in sound, whether solo or others, are always quite good. After finally listening to Doedelzak’s Wandering in Dust, it was no suprise that Doedelzak and Tuyul worked well together on Silent Rain.

The first track, “Skipped Slices”, begins quietly, directing us down an ambient path. But as Doedelzak calls out to Tuyul, Tuyul responds with an answer that in itself is a call to Doedelzak, and he repeats this call wrapped in an answer. The duo quickly turn our ambient journey into the subtle and not-so-subtle noises of daily life. There are interferences, jolts, and even some pleasantness. “Silent Rain”, the second track, begins even more quietly than the first, with Doedelzak on the synth. But at this point, the listener should not be fooled by this lull, as Tuyul and his guitar scrape into the soudscape like a wounded man walking down a dark alley. Somwhere around the 4 minute mark things begin to get even more weird which is never a bad thing. “Silent Rain” comes crashing down half-way through only to regroup itself for future strangeness. Doedelzak and Tuyul’s musical wanderings may be filled with indirectness, even randonmenss, but it is their response to the other’s chaos that brings the music into one sound and makes Onde Poussière’s Silent Rain worth your time.”

Continuo’s documents (january 6, 2016)

“Silent Rain is the first full-length release by Onde Poussière, the duo of Doedelzak (synthesizer) and Kecap Tuyul (guitar), two young Parisian improvisers, both members of the XtetX collective emerging in 2015 to gather improvisers of various origins and organize live meetings and performances in Paris venues.

An exploration of abstract textures for guitar & synth, Silent Rain is comprised of two massive 25-28mns tracks, though not the impenetrable monoliths one might expect from improvising musicians, the music here being carefully sequenced into distinct, successive phases and pauses. Tuyul plays prepared, tabletop guitar à la Keith Rowe while pianist and keyboard player Doedelzak apparently plays a computer emulated, analog synth named Synth1 – developed by Ichiro Toda, see YouTube demo–, as he used on his own solo release Wandering in Dust, also in 2015.

Silent Rain’s first track is build on multiple convolutions, conflagrations and juxtapositions of the instruments – at times I was reminded Thomas Lehn’s own EMS Synthi A improvisations. The second track evolves in more sinuous textures and glacial sounds, both seductive and unsettling to the ear. This release’s FLAC version is particularly gratifying in this respect, what with the deep, spacious sounds of the analog synthesizer and the cavernous resonances of the prepared guitar. Excellent debut release by a promising French duo. “

[Eg0_152] Kecap Tuyul : Trois Clous

While Kecap Tuyul‘s previous album Tunnel Songs was the result of years of slow work, Trois Clous documents it’s rawer improvisations with voice and prepared guitar. Each track was recorded in one day, 2 of them contain no overdubs at all.
Three outlines of an obscure world, where echoes of ritual industrial, subdued bits of minimalist repetitive noisy rock, feedbacky drone (or is it drony feedback) get mashed in in a halo of lo-fi murkiness…
