[Eg0_151] ZH & Stembreo : The Catamite

Parker Weston is a multimedia artist creating music as Stembreo. In The Catamite he teamed with ZH (Zach Hallquist ) to create an amazing multidimensional soundcape. While most of the tracks are based on melancolic dark ambiences, they are often enhanced and distructured by unexpected sound-collages.
A rich and disorienting work that deserves several listenings to fully apreciate its paradoxical coherence.

Aditional insighths by the artists :

ZH (Zach Hallquist)-

“This collaboration allowed me to work outside of the normal constraints I have when creating music.  Typically ZH’s music is calculated/measured, but with Stembreo’s influence/inspiration I was able to let things happen in a more free form manner.”

Parker Weston-

“Stembreo operates like an audio virus, regardless of genre, more reactive than creative, and that only works to my advantage if I’m careful not to let it obscure those I collaborate with, whom are essential to the evolution of my work. Zach’s music brought a certain austere discipline to my audio fuckery that I will take with me no matter what new musical hosts Stembreo encounters and tangos with.”

[Eg0_149] Ars Sonor : Sjöarna

4 years after the EP Box of Matches (in collaboration with Meklabor), Ars Sonor comes back on eg0cide with a full length album based on field recordings made near the Baltic Sea (Himmerfjärden and Baggensfjärden) in May 2012 and May 2013 respectively, lake Mälaren in June 2013, and lake Trekanten in September 2014.

Here we have 4 spacious soundscapes that grow slowly layer after layer and offer not only deep drones but also a hint of atmospheric post-rock. The flawless sound production and the emotional richness of Sjoärna make it a piece of choice for the pickiest amateurs of ambient music.

[Eg0_147] Cody Ban : Sustained Neighbor-tones Drowned By Microtonal Undulations

In our times, it is hard to still believe in something like “harmony of the spheres”. Instead, people like Cody Ban (a duo featuring Lorsen Lo (aka Slo-Blo) and Iban Call)  try to extract some kind of “beauty” from the depths of some subdued rumbling chaos. Using only guitars (with a bunch of stompboxes effects) they produce some of the most adventurous and cosmic drone guitar music I’ve heard since a long time. Piece after piece, their nicely titled-album Sustained Neighbor-tones Drowned By Microtonal Undulationsunveils unveils hypnotic sonic waves that ondulates slowly beyond the surface, leave discret shimmering trails in a wide resonating space, and sometimes roar like a bleeding stellar beast. For people who need some name-dropping, let’s say Cody Ban is like a missing link between Maeror Tri’s abysmal guitar soundcapes and the shoegazey sounds of FSA or Windy & Carl.

Recorded & mixed by Iban at Asla Recording in august 2015

[Eg0_146] Rama Yakub : Time, the deer, is in the Wood of Hallaig

We are glad to publish the fst EP of Rama Yakub, an Indonesian noise and ambient music project of Dani Satria, from Jakarta. Time, the deer, is in the Wood of Hallaig consists of 4 ghostly folk songs  that seem to be broadcasted by a parasited radio station from an imaginary but strangely familiar world. A raw, lo-fi, addictive and intriguing debut that makes us curious to hear more…

[Eg0_145] Doedelzak : Wandering in Dust

Doedelzak is a french musician (pianist / composer / improviser) who recently came under eg0cide’s radar, thanks fo “friends of friends” who led him to participate to the free improvisation collective XtetX since may 2015. Through his diverse musical tastes (early “krautrock”, electronica, traditional musics from various regions of the world, contemporary & medieval composers) and activities, Doedelzak focuses on the use of a few elements (intervals, rythmic patterns, sonorities) without favouring a precise era or style. In his first “officially” published album Wandering in Dust the only sound source used is the virtual synthesizer Synth1 created by Ichiro Toda. Its two long melancolic droney tracks respond to each other,  in a thoughtful, and restrained way, that could remind some minimalist composers like Terry Riley. Despite of these possible reference points, a close listening will let you hear a personal, mature voice that could be expressed by other forms and sounds.

[Eg0_144] XtetX : (2×2)²

This 2nd album of the XtetX was recorded before the first published one Nabemono (recorded in may 2015). At this time (november-december 2014), the XtetX had no name yet, and comprised only 3 members : Jules/Valentin, Kecap Tuyul and Missing O. Their will to play with other improvisers progressively led them to define themselves as an open collective with a variable team, rather than a band with a permanent staff.

The title (2X2)² is an allusion to the album 2X2 (eg0cide productions, 2012) which contained two duos of Kecap Tuyul, one with Charles premier (who later became his partner in Half Evidence), one with Mathew Tyas. This new album also contains two duos of Kecap Tuyul, one with Missing O, one with Jules/Valentin. Like in the first volume, these were the first recordings of these duos.

[Eg0_143] Sobria Ebrietas : Ashes of Light

These three last years, our regular contributor Bertrand Barbier aka Sobria Ebrietas has focused on rather abstract and/or disturbing releases ( The Soundtrack, Üphemism, Ügenics ) under the Eurovision Über Alles pseudonym.

Ashes of Light brings back the smoother and more harmonious side of his earlier project Sobria Ebrietas. At the first encounter, this album is quite an easy listen thanks to catchy melodies, uplifting beats and well chosen samples, but the subtility of compositions and the richness of their details require many listenings to be fully appreciated.

If you want to hear more from Sobrieta Ebrietas, we recommend his compilation Media Res, and his masterpiece Esion.

[Eg0_142] Jeff Sampson : Mining Obscurity

After the minimal and droney Energy of the Multiverse, Jeff Sampson offers us a quite different album containing pieces recorded between 2003 and 2015,  Mining Obscurity. This album lets us discover a wider part of his rich sound palette, while the whole remains very cohesive, demonstrating that the author has a clear and mature vision about his own work.

The foreground vocal melodies in Unaware & Kage are very touching and catchy despite (thanks to?) their sober atmosphere – far away from the stereotyped & overdone gimmicks of most pop singers. The other tracks (using mainly synthesizers and field recordings) are more abstract, while keeping a strong emotional background. Each one has its own nuance, from serenity to darker shades, and contributes to the unique atmosphere of “Mining Obscurity”, an album that manages to blend the smoothness of ambient music and the rough edges of sound experimentation with the depth of human feelings.

Notes by the artist:

This is a small collection of songs created over a slightly larger period of time.
Working the Stream was started in 2006, sat forelorn for several years and completed in 2014.
The original recording for Unaware was in 2003. It was hiding in a hard drive folder waiting for rediscovery in 2014, which is when it was finished.
The Morning After: most of the work was in 2010. Tweaked and mastered 2015.
Kage also began life in 2010. Worked on it off and on. An earlier version was released on Necktar 2017 Volume 7.
Slopes of Ngranek was begun in 2009 and promptly put into hibernation. Large and small parts were added this year. There’s also a thing in it I had saved from 1984.

=====

Jeff Sampson: voices; synthesizers; field recordings; found sounds; sundry hits, slips and blips

Jeph Jerman (on Slopes of Ngranek): clarinet; additional sundry noises
