[Eg0_133] Half Evidence : Entreciel

Time after time, Half Evidence‘s sound becomes more incisive, and their playing more focused, alternating smoothly between meditative atmospheres and explosive intensities . Their new album Entreciel (consisting of 2 tracks improvised and recorded on 9 november 2014) features also a regular use of voices by both members Charles premier and Kecap Tuyul, which enhances the incantatory dimension of their music.

David Nemeth / Acts of Silence (june 3, 2015)

“Half Evidence is the duo of Charles premier and Kecap Tuyul, who are no strangers to the netlabel world. Solo or working with others, premier and Tuyul have made a variety of experimental music in the Creative Commons scene from the ambient to noise, but always live and improvised. Enterciel on Eg0cide Productions is their latest release.

premier and Tuyul’s latest as the duo Half Evidence is Entreciel and, by my count, it’s their fifth release over the last several years, however they have released work on the Necktar and Classwar Karaoke compilations as well. Their first work as a duo was on 2 x 2 (2012), an Eg0cide Production release which featured Tuyul with premier on a track called, “Half Evidence” and another track with Tuyul and Matthew Tyas called “Pasta Doble”. The liner notes mention that the musician Mescalibur  introduced Tuyul to both premiere and Tyas as well as recorded and mixed the “Half Evidence” track. The new duo of premiere and Tuyul would later continue making music together under the moniker Half Evidence. Most of their work has been released on the Eg0cide Productions netlabel.

In listening to Half Evidence’s early work, the releases are consistent good and they are able to keep the listener’s attention as they go from quiet to intense and loud to slow. The first track of Half Evidence’s Entreciel continues their outstanding work though this time voices are added into the fray. As “D’orage-patienter” begins with a Half Evidence whispering to you, making sure you are comfortable and relaxed, maybe they are even offering you a beer. But as the track progresses, you realize that Half Evidence is ripping at your ears, tearing them slowly off, leaving the sides of your head a mixture of blood and sound. You relish in your masochism, enjoying the assault, soaking in the sonic vibrations as best as you can.

Maybe that previous paragraph is filled with ridiculous hyperbole which was most likely caused by listening to some insipid shit previously to my first listen of Enterciel. Regardless of where my head was when I was jotting down my notes, after repeated listens, “D’orage-patienter” is still quite intense.

“D’essor-s’essouffler”, the second and last track of Entreciel, is just as forceful as the opening track though it seems to use more vocal improvisation then it’s predecessor. “D’essor-s’essouffler” grabs and twists you into unbelievable contortions and then releases you into a solitude of noise.

For a long form improvisational experimental album, Half Evidence’s Entreciel keeps the listener intrigued and never bored. Entreciel is most likely Half Evidence’s best release to date, but that should take nothing away from their previous releases which are head and shoulders above some of the work of their peers. Maybe the success of their sound has to do with their frequent collaborations with others — you know that he ability to play well with others. I surely don’t know, but I do enjoy being the recipient of such a wonderful work as Half Evidence’s Entreciel.”

[Eg0_132] ~UNUNE~ : Stone Swan Songs (Alternate Version)

After the the recent  and rather droney/abstract Movements in Decay and the compilation Presenting the Past (which documented his early industrial roots), Stephen Surreal aka UNUNE offers another impressive album on eg0cide. This new version of the previously self-released Stone Swan Songs (containing alternative mixes and 2 long bonus tracks) could be considered as (one of) the missing link(s) between the two  albums mentioned above. It was put together between 2011 / 2013 in 3 locations (apart from the 2 extra tracks) : Loughborough, Stephen’s “nothe home” in the West Highlands of Scotland, & City of Nottingham (where Stephen’s was born and currently lives in.)

Most of the tracks start with distant fuzzy drones and grow slowly, enhanced by many nuances  : melancolic melodies played on various instruments, well controlled waves of noise, muffled shouts from some undisclosed hellish locations, hypnotic march-like beats, folkish acoustic strings – but let’s not spoil everything the album has to give…

This is the longest release ever published on eg0cide – and it is getting the longest description we ever wrote. Indeed a 4h21 album is what can be called a long album accordingly to usual standards (this kind of thing is rarely blamed when speaking about the works of academic composers or writers – but that’s another question) but we think this length is totally justified by the richness and vastness of the feelings and ideas that Sir Surreal’s sonic odissey evokes.

As the titles and cover suggest, the overall mood is crepuscular, and even sinister at times – but also majestous and spacious. This music captures perfectly the intrinsic tension of the melancholy of someone who passed through hard times and irreversible losses : in the same time an elegy for what is dead in us and the endless rise of a radiant (although disillusionned) will to live and to create. Fears, hopes, everything must end – that’s the point where we can start from. This takes a whole life . If you are curious of / interested in such insights, please forget these words and immerse yourself in the 261 minutes of Stone Swan Songs. And if while listening you don’t get why we are so found of this album, please try it later, may it be next year or next decade.

[Eg0_131] Ayato & Natalia Kamia : Cluster

Between abandoned strings warped tapes and esoteric radio broadcasts,  Ayato and Natalia Kamia have found / created a new territory to explore. They are not afraid of silence, they’ve patiently listened to the resonating spaces (inside / outside) and built 8 surprising pieces that will spin around your ears like sparkles from some unknow satellites. Despite of its short length, Cluster is a very rich album, containing enough ideas to fill the full discography of less inspired musicians…You’ll probably want to hear more, so we recommend to check Ayato & Natalia previous collaboration : T, published by H.AK. Lo-Fi Record

Reviews

David Nemeth / Acts of Silence (january 28, 2015)

“Cluster, the new release from the duo of Ayato and Natalia Kamia on eg0cide Productions, starts out rather beautifully, but don’t let that fool you. Yes, Cluster is rather appealing, the music that the duo provides is deceptively fascinating. Ayato mixed this release to be the equivalent to walking through an unknown house: each room, an audible incantation; each corner, an engaging glitch;  each hallway, an added noise. Kamia played the piano, the qifteli and other objects, while Ayato played guitars, tapes, field recordings and laptop. If you enjoy this release, make sure you pick up their April 2014 release, T, on the netlabel H.A.K. Lo-Fi Record. T was mixed by Kamia, but it has the same inherent feel as Cluster, or should I say that Cluster has the same feel as T.”

[Eg0_130] CDRX : The purgatory’s public swimming pool

Let’s starts the new year with one of our fidel contributors: CDRX. His new album The purgatory’s public swimming pool is a captivating subterranean soundscape. This time some noisy / industrial-flavoured touches have been included, and the final result is rather dark and gritty, but with a very cohesive atmosphere despite of its heterogenous components.

[Eg0_128] Jeff Sampson : Energy of the Multiverse

Jeff Sampson is an american singer / keyboardist / composer with a rich background in ambient and experimental music, but also free improvisation and progressive rock. Since our first listening to some of his voice-based music in 2011 (the splendid Requiem in shallows) we wished  to release some of his works. Energy of the multiverse was worth the wait. This long-form drone is very pleasant and subtle, a perfect soundtrack for daydreaming on a lazy sunday.

If you enjoy this free download piece, you can check its predecessor energy of the universe and support Jeff by buying its digital or cd edition. Eg0cide should also release one of his new albums in 2015…

[Eg0_127] Unune : Presenting The Past

After having publishing his recent album Movements in Decay ,  we welcome back Stephen Surreal aka Unune with a massive live compilation from 1979 until present,  featuring incarnations : ~UNUNE~  ( 2011/Present ),  Tears Of Ochre ( 2010/2011 ),  Agony For Pleasure ( 1986/1993 ), S.K.U.M. ( 1979/1986 ). Presenting The Past contains more than 3 hours of experimental / industrial music, including creepy minimal stuff, noisy experiments, but also catchy rythmical tunes like “Primal scream” or “Dogmandog”. Fans of  early Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire (and more obscure projects from this first wave of industrial music) shouldn’t miss the opportunity to discover the uncompromising works of this unheralded sound explorer.

[Eg0_126] Crepusculo : I’m a comet – You are the world

Crepusclo‘s third release on eg0cide shows a significant evolution in the artist’s works. On this new EP I’m a comet – You are the world, he added some flesh and feelings to his usual cold and abstract style to create two catchy ambient dub tracks with more marked beats and upfront melody.  But as usual with Crepusculo, this EP is completely hypnotic, carefully composed and mixed.
